VINTAGE FOOT SCRUBBERS
In Rajasthan, India, there is a unique type of vintage foot scrubber known as Vajri, which is made from cast metal. These foot scrubbers not only serve the purpose of cleansing one’s feet but also play a significant role in signalling others that someone is washing down by the river. The distinctive feature of Vajri foot scrubbers is the jingling sound they produce when used.
In rural areas of Rajasthan, where access to modern sanitation facilities may be limited, people often gather by the riverside to perform their daily bathing and washing rituals. The Vajri foot scrubbers are an essential tool in this process, allowing individuals to clean their feet effectively while also serving as a means of communication with others.
The foot scrubbers are crafted from durable cast metal and are designed with small metal bells, ghungroos, within their base. As one uses the scrubber to wash their feet in the river, the movement creates a gentle jingling sound.
We have them available in three designs; a cat, camel, or elephant. Today, they can be repurposed as unique paperweights or ornamental pieces.
